Acid-washed activated carbon undergoes an additional treatment step that strips out soluble ash, iron, and trace minerals, resulting in very low leachable impurities and a low, stable pH. This makes it the preferred choice for pharmaceutical, food-grade, and high-purity chemical applications where even trace metal contamination is unacceptable. Standard (non-acid-washed) carbon is suitable for general water treatment, wastewater, and industrial decolorization where this extra purity level isn't required. Reactivated (or regenerated) carbon is previously used material that has been thermally treated to restore a portion of its original capacity, typically at a lower cost but with somewhat reduced and more variable performance. Always confirm explicitly with your supplier whether you're being quoted virgin or reactivated material, since the two are not interchangeable for applications requiring consistent, high-purity performance, such as potable water or pharmaceutical use.
Granular and pellet activated carbon (typically not powdered) can be thermally reactivated after exhaustion, restoring 80–90% of virgin adsorption capacity at a fraction of the cost of new carbon.
